Can you believe it's this time of year again?
I've finished art school - it's finally the holidays. At home, I'm working on something big and overambitious. At work, I get to pimp out the blackboard!

I thought I'd spend heaps of time painting these holidays, because I just miss it so much during the semester - 'it' being free time, time to do my own work in my own style. Like this little piece. But as always this free time mostly turned into a break from art itself, especially because of how easy it becomes to procrastinate and avoid working in my studio when I know that if anything I should be doing all the holiday homework we were set for painting... but I'm over abstraction, and the fact that I can't take it seriously is so demotivating. So the past couple of weeks were spent on lots of road tripping, tramping, experimental vegan cooking/baking, reading, and catching up with people I haven't seen since art school swallowed me up.

It's been wonderful. And although it's not much, the handful of little paintings and drawings like this one were so refreshing, and I'm feeling somewhat inspired again.

My goal right now, for schoolwork and my own work, is to get out of my creative comfort zone. To use media and techniques that I'm not used to, nor good at, nor that I even necessarily like. Make mistakes. Learn from them. Failure is great.

CSI week 2

My series of 3 drawings, for the second week of our CSI project. I've been taking inspiration from Susan Collis' macro-sculptures and Shaun Tan's illustrations. And I've made myself the criminal.

Mini Savouries

Recently I've been doing drawings on the bakery's blackboard during my shifts, so I can almost convince myself I'm a paid artist... of sorts. I was so glad when they introduced these pies: the picture before this was the new sticky date pudding, which were much harder to make seemingly appetizing, as they look like sticky brown lumps.

CSI: week one

Back to art school, and it finally feels like art school. We're doing a drawing paper this semester. Yes, actually doing drawings - carrying around portfolios and rolls of giant paper, pinning them to the walls, getting our hands covered in charcoal, rubbing our tired sleep deprived eyes from late nights of sketching and ending up with conspicuous bruise-like facial smudges, or maybe that's just me... awkward. But anyway it's wonderful.

Our first project: CSI. We need to invent and draw a crime scene, and mine is shoplifting - the crime scene being the local art shop, and us as the criminals. I'll keep ya posted.
